What is Faculty Mentoring?

Faculty Mentors serve declared undergraduate majors and graduate students in the appropriate discipline, focusing on career advice, internship and research opportunities, and future academic pursuits. Faculty mentors have in-depth knowledge of their field and are the best resource for expanding students' understanding of the discipline.

Faculty Mentors Save the Day

  • Check with your department chair, as each college takes a different approach to assigning mentees.  College advisors manage the mentor lists.
  • Mentee lists can be found in your Google drive and are updated weekly.

  • Mentoring creates relationships with students that helps them feel like they belong.
  • Mentoring helps students to create a path forward from their degree to career.
  • Mentoring is expected of faculty and are part of the tenure, promotion, and evaluation processes.
  • Mentoring is a fulfilling experience for both faculty and students.

Faculty Mentors Save the Day

  • Provide your mentees with both career assistance and emotional support.
  • Remember that the best mentorships become more personal, reciprocal, and inspiring over time.
  • Pursue growth-fostering interactions with mentees by practicing empathy, authenticity, and empowerment.
  • Avoid trying to be all things to your mentee and encourage them to develop a network of mentors.
  • Avoid efforts to make mentees in your own image; encourage their originality and independence.1
  • Help your mentee to set goals, which are linked with mentee satisfaction.2
