Guidelines for the Ethical Use of AI at NSU
1. PROTECTION OF DATA
As generative AI tools become increasingly integrated into academic and administrative work, it is essential to use these technologies responsibly. At NSU, all faculty, staff, and students are expected to follow these core guidelines when using AI systems:
- Do not input, upload, or share any personally identifiable information (PII) about students or employees into AI tools, including names, ID numbers, grades, contact information, or other sensitive data.
- Never use AI tools to process, analyze, or store data that is protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) or other applicable privacy regulations.
- Ensure that any use of AI complies with university data security policies and does not involve confidential research, internal documents, or proprietary university information.
- Use AI tools transparently and ethically, giving appropriate attribution when AI is used to generate content or assist with work.
By following these guidelines, our university community can explore the benefits of generative AI while safeguarding student privacy and maintaining compliance with all legal and ethical obligations.
2. RESPONSIBILITY FOR CONTENT ACCURACY AND OWNERSHIP
Generative AI tools may produce content that is inaccurate, misleading, or based on fabricated sources, including non-existent citations. Additionally, AI-generated outputs may incorporate material from third-party authors, which may be subject to copyright protections. Faculty members bear the responsibility for critically evaluating all AI-generated content to ensure its factual accuracy, proper attribution, and compliance with copyright and academic integrity standards.
