The CFSA has 12 approved microcredentials for faculty to earn. You can earn microcredentials in teaching, scholarship, and faculty development.

Teaching Microcredentials
Teaching Level 1
Teaching Foundations
Description:
This badge demonstrates foundational competence in teaching practices. The holder has acquired essential skills in instructional techniques and can apply basic teaching strategies in a learning environment.
Requirements:
- Complete two approved workshops for this badge along with their artifacts, and have the artifacts accepted as valid by the faculty members who gave the workshops.
- Complete an observation of a master teacher’s class or have them observe their class. The master teacher will submit a form confirming that the observation took place and was discussed informally.
Teaching Level 2
Teaching Advancement
Description:
This badge represents an advanced ability to apply interactive and student-centered teaching techniques. The holder is skilled in using technology and active learning strategies to enhance student engagement.
Requirements:
- Have already completed the Teaching Foundations Microcredential.
- Complete two approved workshops for this badge along with their artifacts, and have the artifacts accepted as valid by the faculty members who gave the workshops.
- Develop a new instructional strategy or activity and implement it in their classroom. Submit a reflection on its impact.
Teaching Level 3
Mastery in Teaching
Description:
This badge recognizes mastery in various instructional methods, including differentiated learning and effective assessment techniques. The holder can tailor instruction to meet diverse student needs and evaluate learning outcomes effectively.
Requirements:
- Have already completed the Teaching Advancement Microcredential.
- Complete two approved workshops for this badge along with their artifacts, and have the artifacts accepted as valid by the faculty members who gave the workshops.
- Complete (or update) and submit a complete alignment map for a course, using backwards design.
Teaching Level 4
Teaching Excellence
Description:
This badge demonstrates expertise in educational leadership, mentorship, and innovation. The holder has led faculty development initiatives and actively contributes to advancing teaching practices within their institution.
Requirements:
- Have already completed the Mastery in Teaching Microcredential.
- Complete two approved workshops for this badge along with their artifacts, and have the artifacts accepted as valid by the faculty members who gave the workshops.
- Design and lead an approved workshop for this series of microcredentials to share their expertise with peers.
Scholarship Microcredentials
Scholarship Level 1
Scholarly Foundations
Description:
This badge signifies foundational knowledge in research methodology and scholarly inquiry. The holder can formulate basic research questions and design appropriate research plans for academic study.
Requirements:
- Complete two approved workshops for this badge along with their artifacts, and have the artifacts accepted as valid by the faculty members who gave the workshops.
- Create a research plan, including identifying potential areas of inquiry, funding sources, and conferences for presenting. Submit the plan using the provided form.
Scholarship Level 2
Scholarly Growth
Description:
This badge demonstrates proficiency in conducting research, writing proposals, and presenting findings. The holder has expanded their knowledge of academic research processes and strategies for disseminating results.
Requirements:
- Have already completed the Scholarly Foundations Microcredential.
- Complete two approved workshops for this badge along with their artifacts, and have the artifacts accepted as valid by the faculty members who gave the workshops.
- Submit a grant application or a proposal to a conference, even if it’s not yet accepted. Submit confirmation of the submission.
Scholarship Level 3
Scholarly Leadership
Description:
This badge signifies expertise in advanced research techniques and collaboration. The holder has demonstrated the ability to manage interdisciplinary research projects and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
Requirements:
- Have already completed the Scholarly Growth Microcredential.
- Complete two approved workshops for this badge along with their artifacts, and have the artifacts accepted as valid by the faculty members who gave the workshops.
- Collaborate on a research project with faculty from a different department or university, fostering interdisciplinary scholarship. Submit a reflection of the collaborative experience.
Scholarship Level 4
Scholarly Excellence
Description:
This badge represents a high level of scholarly accomplishment. The holder has led major research initiatives and demonstrated leadership in mentoring and promoting research within the academic community.
Requirements:
- Have already completed the Scholarly Leadership Microcredential.
- Complete two approved workshops for this badge along with their artifacts, and have the artifacts accepted as valid by the faculty members who gave the workshops.
- Publish a paper in a peer-reviewed journal, or lead a research initiative that involves mentoring early-career scholars. Submit confirmation of completion.
Faculty Development Microcredentials
Professional Development Level 1
Development Foundations
Description:
This badge demonstrates engagement in self-improvement through professional development. The holder has completed basic training in areas such as time management or leadership skills.
Requirements:
- Complete two approved workshops for this badge along with their artifacts, and have the artifacts accepted as valid by the faculty members who gave the workshops.
- Complete and submit a self-assessment or Individual Development Plan (IDP) to identify areas for growth in leadership or professional skills.
Professional Development Level 2
Faculty Growth
Description:
This badge represents active participation in faculty development programs. The holder has developed skills in leadership, emotional intelligence, and team collaboration.
Requirements:
- Have already completed the Development Foundations Microcredential.
- Complete two approved workshops for this badge along with their artifacts, and have the artifacts accepted as valid by the faculty members who gave the workshops.
- Engage in a peer-mentoring program or participate in a faculty learning community (FLC). Submit confirmation of participation.
Professional Development Level 3
Leadership Development
Description:
This badge signifies the ability to mentor and lead within the academic community. The holder is skilled in guiding colleagues, providing constructive feedback, and leading teams or initiatives.
Requirements:
- Have already completed the Faculty Growth Microcredential.
- Complete two approved workshops for this badge along with their artifacts, and have the artifacts accepted as valid by the faculty members who gave the workshops.
- Lead a committee, campus initiative, or task force, showcasing leadership skills in a practical setting. Submit a reflection of the experience.
Professional Development Level 4
Faculty Excellence
Description:
This badge represents excellence in institutional leadership and strategic planning. The holder has demonstrated sustained contributions to faculty development and has led transformative initiatives at their institution.
Requirements:
- Have already completed the Leadership Development Microcredential.
- Complete two approved workshops for this badge along with their artifacts, and have the artifacts accepted as valid by the faculty members who gave the workshops.
- Design and lead an approved workshop for this series of microcredentials to share their expertise with peers.
